Japanese Language School of Greater Boston (JLS) was established under a non-profit organization, Japanese Association of Greater Boston, in 1975. It initially provided Japanese language education for a mere 25 students. Starting from scratch, members worked tirelessly to establish the school, with the first Principal Dr. Koichi Masubuchi, then a professor at MIT, at the center of these efforts. There were numerous hardships in the beginning, from locating classrooms to recruiting qualified teachers, and these tasks were carried out diligently by a group of volunteers together with Professor Masubuchi. In the beginning, JLS was a small organization which functioned primarily by the active involvement of the parents and guardians from the school, but the school has evolved into an organization of more than 700 students who study in one of its five divisions (Kindergarten, Elementary School, Middle School, High School and Japanese as a Second Language).
１９７５年、ボストン日本語学校は公益法人ボストン日本人会の下に設立され、僅か２５名の子供達の日本語教育の場としてスタートしました。すべてが手探り状態の中、学校を創立するために中心となって奔走してくださったのが、初代校長増渕興一氏。当時は苦労が大変多く、教室探しから教員確保まで、増渕氏と共に多くの有志者達が力を尽くされたと伝えられています。保護者全員が学校運営に関わる小さな組織でしたが、現在では、幼稚部、小学部、中学部、高校部、日本語の５学部で、７００名以上の子供達が学習しています。 | |||||||||||

JLS is designated as a supplementary educational institution, whose operations consist of three hours of Japanese curriculum every Saturday. In the Elementary School, Middle School and High School, classes are taught in such a way that all students will be able to acquire basic skills in the subjects under study, primarily in Japanese language and using the same textbooks used in schools in Japan. Moreover, beyond Japanese language education, other subjects such as arithmetic/mathematics, Japanese history etc., and events related to Japanese culture, infant early education, activities such as Sport’s Day are also incorporated into the school curriculum to provide a diverse educational experience in Japanese.
All children at JLS also attend regular local schools on the weekdays, and on Saturday they come to JLS for Japanese-language education. Although it is generally believed that children are very adept at learning languages, in reality it is a difficult task to acquire two languages simultaneously. Navigating between two cultures may sometimes be confusing to the children. It may even expose them to conflicting customs or cultural experiences. Despite all these challenges, students at JLS study hard to master Japanese language in order to understand the importance of culture and society, and the importance of cooperation in daily life. Programs *Kindergarten (9 Classes, Ages 3-5): Japanese Language and culture are taught, using the whole language approach. The goal is to have children communicate in proper Japanese about their lives and thoughts. Japanese alphabets are introduced. * Elementary School (18 Classes, Grade 1-6, Ages 6-12): Japanese language and mathematics are taught according to the curriculum from the Japanese Ministry of Education. * Middle School (5 Classes, Grade 7-9, Ages 12-15): Instruction is given in Japanese language and mathematics according to the curriculum from the Japanese Ministry of Education. In the Japanese class, the texts related to the Japanese culture, customs and history are often introduced. *High School (2 Classes, Grade 10,11 and Auditors, Ages 15-18): The Senior High School program consists of two courses of contemporary Japanese language and Japanese history, and plus one course in which the students choose between classical Japanese and mathematics. *Japanese as a Second Language (5 Classes, Ages 6-17): Students, whose first language is not Japanese, are given courses covering Japanese language along with Japanese culture and customs. * Japanese Library: The Library at JLS in Boston specializes in Japanese books, and is open during JLS school hours every Saturday morning. This library can be used by anyone for free, not only limited to students and parents of JLS. More information, please see the website which is available in English. ******************************************* 本校は、補習授業校と呼ばれ、毎週土曜日３時間授業をおこなっています。小中高部では、日本国内で使用している教科書を用いて、国語を中心に基礎基本を習得するための授業を実施しています。また、算数（数学）や日本史などの授業だけでなく、日本文化や幼児対象総合学習、運動会などの活動も取り入れ、多面的な日本語教育の場を提供しています。 本校に通うすべての子供達は、平日は現地校にて英語で教育を受け、土曜日はここボストン日本語学校で日本語教育を受けています。よく子供は簡単に言葉を習得できると聞きますが、学習言語として英語と日本語を両立することは、非常に難しいものです。また、ふたつの文化の中で、戸惑いを感じる事や、辛い経験もあるでしょう。しかし、本校の生徒は、日常の生活において、文化や社会を相互に理解する重要性や、共に協力して生きる力、そして、そのために必要な言語力を習得しています。 教育課程 幼稚部:言葉、表現、人間関係を中心に指導する。日常生活の中で、言葉への興味や関心を育て、喜んで話したり、聞いたりする態度や言葉に対する感覚を養うようにする。また、多様な体験を通じて豊かな感性を育て、創造性を豊かにする。 小学部:日本の小学校教育課程のうち、国語と算数を扱う。とりわけて全ての教科の基礎となる国語に重点を置く。ただし、授業日数の関係上、日本の小学校と同程度の内容の教育を実施することは困難なため、両教科とも教材を精選の上重点的指導を行う。また、特別活動においては、望ましい集団活動を通して、心身の調和の取れた発達と個性の伸張を図り、集団の一員として自主的、実践的な態度を育てる。 中学部:日本の中学校教育課程のうち、国語と数学を扱う。国語では、日本の風土、習慣、歴史等、文化的素材も積極的に取り入れる。数学では、数学本来の目的である論理的思考の育成の他に、日本語による数学的表現に慣れさせ、度量衡の違いにも慣れさせる。ただし、授業時数の関係上、両教科とも日本の中学校と同程度の内容を扱うことは困難なため、教材を精選の上重点指導を行う。また、特別活動においては、望ましい集団活動を通して、心身の調和の取れた発達と個性の伸張を図り、集団の一員として自主的、実践的な態度を育てる。 高校部:言語文化に対する関心を一層深め、言語感覚を豊かにしながら国語を愛する態度を育てる。また、日本史の学習を通して、日本の歴史や文化を尊重しつつ、国際的視点から日本のよさを学ぶ。さらに、選択制を導入し、生徒のニーズに応じて数学、日本古典の学習も進める。また、特別活動においては、望ましい集団活動を通して、心身の調和の取れた発達と個性の伸張を図り、集団の一員として自主的、実践的な態度を育てる。 日本語部: 日本語を第一言語としない児童生徒を対象に、日本語及び日本の文化等について指導を行う。小学校１年から５年生までは、学齢によるクラス編制を行い、楽しく学ぶ日本語学習を目指す。小学校６年以上は、習熟度による編制を行い、日本語を外国語として、文法も含め系統的に学ぶ。日本語５修了時には、SATⅡ 受験に対応できる能力が身につくことを目標とする。また、特別活動においては、望ましい集団活動を通して、心身の調和のとれた発達と個性の伸長を図り、集団の一員としての自主的、実践的な態度を育てる。 ボストン日本語図書館は、ボストン日本語学校の日本語教育環境を充実するために日本語学校内に開館する日本語専門の図書館です。毎週土曜日の午前中の開館時間にはたくさんの日本語学校の生徒や保護者の皆さんがおとずれ、半日に700冊以上もの本が貸出し、返却されています。 詳細については、サイトを参照してください. | |||||||||||

Parents (PTA) are the ones who support the JLS!
The Japanese Language School of Greater Boston is a non-profit organization, and is run by a Steering Committee made up of parent volunteers. They are our main resource. PTA's duty: * Understand and participate the PTA activities * Attend PTA general meeting * Payment of PTA membership fee * Participate in the on-duty system * Help out school events All parents of elementary students and above participate in the on duty system, which means volunteering in one of the following areas: the safety patrol, the coffee/bake sale, and the library; the Kindergarten parents help in classes. Parents take their turn a few times a year per child. The details of the duties are given by members of each committee (or by the teacher, in case of Kindergarten helpers.) Masabuchi Fund: The Japanese Language School of Greater Boston Gift Fund (Masubuchi Fund) supports the healthy and stable operation and continued development of the school. It strives to nurture the development of children who will be able to contribute to the future of such an international society. Your support and understanding for this fund will be greatly appreciated. Contribution to JLS Library: At JLS, we consider this library as an important teaching asset for education in Japanese, and have put an effort to allocate a certain library budget. However, there is a limit to purchase new books due to the tight financial situation. Many of the books at the JLS Library are contributions made over time by parents and people who have helped run the school. We would appreciate your continuing support by contributing to education in Japanese. ボストン日本語学校は非営利団体として、運営委員以下多くのボランティアによる支援活動によって学校として成り立っておりますが、言うまでもなくその活動の主体は保護者自身であり、子供達の教育環境をより良いものにしていくことはＰＴＡの責任です。本校ＰＴＡでは、週に1回３時間だけの学校という特殊な環境の中で、子どもたちがより安全な学校生活を送り、楽しく学習できるようにと活動を進めております。新入会員の皆様にもご理解いただき、是非ご協力下さいますようお願い申し上げます。 PTA会員としての保護者の役割 ※保護者は全員、入学と同時にPTA会員となります。 ☆ PTA活動への理解と参加 ☆ PTA総会への出席 ☆ PTA会費の納入（一家庭につき１０ドル/年を、４月(または転入時)に納入します） ☆ クラス当番制度への参加と厳守 ☆ クラス役員選出制度への理解と参加 ☆ 学校行事の手伝い クラス当番制度とは・・・ 安全パトロール当番・コーヒー当番・図書当番・ファーストエイド当番があり、小学部以上の生徒一人につき年２～３回割り当てられます。子ども達が安心して有意義に学校生活を送れるように、保護者同士が協力して、学校･学級運営を支えるために不可欠な制度です。ボストン日本語学校保護者の義務として、責任を持って参加していただく必要があります。 注）幼稚部や日本語部など一部のクラスでは、学校から保護者に依頼される、クラスヘルパーがあります。 基金の仕組み: ボストン日本語学校の健全且つ安定した運営と継続的な発展、また本校で学ぶ子供達の育成を支援するために「増渕ボストン日本語学校支援基金」が設立されました。皆様の温かいご支援、ご協力をお願い致します。 図書寄付のお願い: 日本語学校では図書館を日本語教育における重要な副教材と位置付け、できるかぎりの図書館予算を確保しようと努力してきています。 しかし、厳しい財政の中で新規に購入できる図書の数には限りがあります。 日本語図書館の蔵書の多くは長い間に学校保護者や関係者の皆さんからのご好意で寄付された本によって充実させてきたものです。 これからもさらに充実した日本語教育環境のためによろしくご協力ください。 寄付いただいた書籍は、図書館貸出し図書とブックフェアーなど販売用図書に選別させていただきますので、ご帰国で日本にお持ち帰りにならない本、ご家庭で不要になった日本語の本、雑誌など是非お持ちください。 | |||||||||||
