¿Quién lo comenzó? Victoria Sauron is the President of BEE. She moved to France in 2001 with her French husband and has two young children. Realising the task ahead of teaching her children to read and write in English with little or no expertise or resources, Victoria, with the support of a small group of other English speaking mums, launched BEE as a not-for-profit association in June 2008.
¿Cuándo comenzó? BEE began regular English literacy classes in September 2008. An iGCSE class for teenagers started in September 2009. BEE has been going from strength to strength and now has over 60 children attending each week.
¿Cómo lo comenzó? (Por ejemplo: ¿algún desafío? ¿Quién lo ayudó? BEE was set up by, and has been run by Victoria as a volunteer for two years with the support of a small committee.
¿Cómo funciona? (Por ejemplo: ¿Qué hace usted? ¿Quién lo hace? BEE English literacy classes are taught by experienced and qualified British teachers and include an IGCSE English course.

We use the classrooms of a local school, which are empty on a Wednesday, so children can benefit from a classroom environment and equipment - even including an interactive whiteboard!

We also have an English children's library with several hundred books.

We have 8 employees, two independents and two volunteers working for us on a regular basis.
¿Cómo hace para que el grupo o el programa continúe funcionando? Parents pay fees for each class which help pay the salaries of our teaching staff. Our regular classes work out at about 7,50 euros an hour. Classes are taught in small groups of approximately 8 pupils with qualified teachers and classroom assistants.

After two years Victoria continues to be committed to BEE remaining not-for-profit as she believes this benefits BEE the most. She hopes that BEE will still be running in 16 years so that her baby daughter can do her iGCSE English! So her continued energy comes from that hope and from the pleasure of seeing children make the most of their bilingualism thanks to her hard work and that of the teachers and committee.
¿Cómo se benefician las familias bilingues o internacionales? BEE English literacy classes for Anglophone children take place only on a Wednesday, so children can stay integrated in the normal French school system the rest of the week. Our aim is to complement normal French schooling in the most flexible and economical way possible, providing families with access to a full bilingual education, with all the advantages of a group setting and at a fraction of the cost of one-to-one tuition. All lessons are taught in small groups (6 classes with an average of 8 pupils in each) by fully qualified and experienced British teachers using recognised British methods and with reference to the UK National Literacy Framework. Classes are fun and creative at all levels. Wednesdays at BEE make for a real change from the rest of the school week!

We also have an English children's library with several hundred books.

BEE classes on Wednesdays are full of fun, varied activities, including lots of creative work, speaking and listening, and socialising while English literacy skills are worked on in a non-pressured, friendly environment. In addition, BEE runs extracurricular activities in English including drama, art, and music, a bilingual Junior Choir, and English classes for French children taught through music, games and creative activities.
¿Tiene algún consejo para otros que quieran iniciar un grupo similar? BEE would like to help and support other non-profit literacy initiatives elsewhere in France and we are more than happy to respond to queries about how we set up.
