My husband and I moved to France via Geneva seven years ago and joined a similar association in Ain (01). It soon became clear to us how vital it is to our maintain children’s maternal language when growing up abroad – not just spoken but written too.
On moving to Civray and speaking to other concerned parents, it became evident that there was a demand for a similar programme here and so Accents was born.

Accents is a not-for-profit association under Loi 1901 whose objectives are:
* To maintain the level of English amongst the growing population of Anglophone school age children in the region. * To support the learning of English by non-Anglophone students (pre-school, school and adult). * To provide a platform for the development of multilingual activities embracing all nationalities. * To provide support to all members of multilingual families including the parents of bilingual children. LITERACY CLASSES Through the use of the latest materials from the UK, our experienced and qualified English teachers have developed a course which broadly follows the UK Revised Framework for Literacy but remains flexible enough to meet the individual needs of children growing up in France and attending French schools. Each child's individual language background can be taken into account as we limit our class sizes to a maximum of 15 children. We cater for children from approximately Foundation year through to KS3 in preparation for the iGCSE (Grande section upwards). Our courses cover: * Reading * Writing * Spelling * Grammar * Comprehension * Developing different writing styles MOTHER & TODDLERS GROUP Our aim is to provide a weekly opportunity for Mums (and Dads, Grannies, Carers) to meet other Mums with youngsters in a friendly and stimulating environment. Come along and meet some new faces over coffee whilst your little one socialises with other youngsters of a similar age. Varied activities each week including.... Play dough Colouring Singing Arts & crafts Story telling ACCENTS PARENTS SUPPORT NETWORK In June 2009, we launched our Parents Support Network. This was in reaction to the many questions and requests for support from families with children growing up in an unfamiliar education system. We hold open house talks and events. A small charge is made for these events to cover costs and places should be reserved by calling 05.49.97.10.17 or e-mailing Accents.

Hear what our parents have to say about Accents:
" I would like to say a huge thankyou to all the Accents team for their hard work and dedication over the last year, the teachers are obviously highly motivated and passionate about teaching children and it shows. Prior to my child starting the programme, I had not encountered the Ruth Miskin method of teaching and have been really impressed by this effective, fun and fast way of learning to read and write. We are really lucky to have access to this programme in France so well done and keep up the good work! " VP "Having three children at very different literacy levels, I was desperate to find a way to keep their English up to the same levels as friends 'back home'. Accents has helped me to achieve this through their expert teachers and carefully chosen materials. I would recommend this course to any parent for whom English is important." JD. "When we moved to France with an 8 year old and a 4 year old we felt it important to keep the children up to speed with all aspects of the English language. My 8 year old daughter could read and we have kept this up, but found that her writing skills were falling behind. I was relieved to find Accents had started up near us. I enrolled my daughter. Although she has sometimes found it hard, as she has a slight learning disability, I do feel it has helped her immensely. For the future I feel it absolutely vital that her spoken and written language skills are excellent, the world is getting smaller and there are many more people who have the language skills to compete in the job market, every edge we can give our children is a bonus. Also in college she can take English as another language, this will be a great confidence booster as, hopefully, she will be near the top of the class. I have now enrolled my son, he is now 7 and really enjoying it. " LP .
