Quando foi criado? Bilingualism Special Interest Group (SIG) traces its roots back to a Symposium on Bilingualism held at the 1985 JALT International Conference in Kyoto. The enthusiastic response to this symposium convince organizers to make this an annual Conference event and to draw up a petition asking JALT to allow the formation of a Special Interest Group on Bilingualism. Como funciona? (por exemplo: O que vocês fazem? Quem o faz?) Bilingualism SIG is perhaps the only national organization devoted to bilingual parenting and education in Japan.

One of our aims to further research on bilingualism and disseminate this information in Japan. Some ongoing research topics include:

* Family policies towards bilingualism

* Bilingual and bicultural identity

* Codeswitching and language mixing

* Bilingual language acquisition

We publish a newsletter 'Bilingual Japan'. Each issue contains useful articles and reports for families. Regular columns include:

* Bilingualism in the News

* Research Forum reviews

* Bilingual Case-studies

* Children's Books

* Book Reviews.

Our internet discussion group is an excellent way to meet and talk with other parents raising children bilingually in Japan. None of us is such an expert that we have all the answers, but by joining the Bilingualism SIG, you will be sure to find someone who can sympathize with your position and offer advice when you need it.

Como vocês mantem o grupo/programa funcionando? Bilingualism promises to be an important topic for an increasingly large percentage of Japan's population. In order to serve this population, the Bilingualism SIG will continue its established activities and publications; and it hopes to embark on new projects and to explore new areas of bilingualism and biculturalism according to the interests and energy of its members.
